People arriving in Darwin at times were attracted to ABC due to the welcome atmosphere at ABC.




At times these people joined ABC as members / committee members.




When people were transferred back to their home states




they tried to keep in touch with ABC




but ABC




tended to not keep in touch with previous members returning to their home states.

Paddy Carroll a member of NT labor party & a leader of a union who led a fight for equal pay for aborigines working on stations.








Paddy Carroll was involved in forming Arafura Bowls Club (ABC)












1966 Wave Hill Station Walk Off by Aborigines in which Paddy Carroll was involved trying to get equal pay for aborigines working on NT top end cattle stations

1973 March ABC conducted Arafura Bowls Carnival which was held annually by ABC which was a very successful carnival attended by people from all states of Australia & the Asia Pacific Region. After ABC folded it seems Nightcliff Bowls Club could have taken up organising the Arafura Bowls Carnival which could have been absorbed by Arafura Games held in May every two years from 1991 involving 32 nations competing in 32 sports by 2002

1977 ABC elections replaced all positions except Treasurer and Secretary
Ken Hunter said Ken was surprised Treasurer did not oppose Fred Wilson's claim for reimbursement. Treasurer said what Fred claimed was in line with salary for similar work.
Fred Wilson wrote letter of resignation from being a member of ABC.

1978 ABC elections replaced a lot of old board including installation of new President Ross B Walters who placed huge restrictions on spending to keep debt within manageable levels

2001April ABC Public Officer wrote letter to Denis Burke NT CLP Government asking for urgent help of $190,000 to help ABC develop mechanisms to become financially viable.





The request was never met with no written reply even though NT CLP Government had just approved a similar sized grant to Palmerston Golf Club.







ABC then undertook significant building & upgrades based on a wink & a nod from Mr Burke at a later meeting.







ABC acted in good faith that they would be assisted but that never came and ABC went from bad to much much worse.







Judicial Manager said ABC was trading insolvent & must be wound up with assets to be sold to cover debts.



2001 ABC started ambitious refurbishment of clubhouse added $120,000 to ABC's debts

Nightcliff Bowls Club is one of two bowls clubs in NT using Dry Max as its bowls surface on its two bowls greens installed about September 2009.


20100515 approx we emailed NSW Bowls Selector asking what was above drymax like to play on compared to normal grass bowling green.









As at 3 June 2010 there was no response to this enquiry.





Response later received stating it was different to bowling on grass bowls green.
